Tittie Tuesday: Something Different
Ok, so I'm going to tell you about the weird thing that happened the other day. If you were expecting something sexy today, sorry to disappoint, but anyway, here it is.
I went to Subway to grab a sandwich, and I decided to eat it there. I had my Kindle with me, so I was set. I had my yummy sandwich, and was relaxing with my Cherry Coke, reading a kinda cheesy vampire story when I noticed a strange looking woman walk in, and go directly to the case that has bottled water, milk, and other stuff like that. She caught my eye cuz she was dressed kinda funny, and had a gold sparkly bow clip in her hair, like something a child would wear. She also was carrying 2 purses. Ok, this was weird.
The place was kinda busy at the time, about 5 customers waiting. There was apparently only one guy working in the whole place, and my eye was drawn to this woman, carrying 2 purses, and looking a little funky. She stood at the case with it open forever, and I was reminded of my mother always yelling at my brother to "pick something or close the door!" to the fridge. She took a couple of bottles out and closed the door. She also had a coat over her arm.
Does she get in line to pay? Nope. She goes into the restroom. She's in there for a good 15 minutes. The customers turn over, they've all been helped, and new ones are at the counter. She finally comes out, and get this. She's only holding one purse, and no bottles of anything. The purse over her shoulder is quite large. My guess is that she put the smaller purse inside of it, and stayed in the restroom long enough to drink the bottles she took in there.
She walks back over to the cold case, and gets out another drink. She takes it up to the counter, and waits while the guy finishes making a sandwich, then he rings her up for the drink, and she leaves. The whole time she was in the restroom, and after she came out, I sat there wondering if I should say something to the guy behind the counter. I mean, what could he have done? The store was full of people, and he was the only one working. Do you call the cops for theft of a couple of drinks? But did she also steal someone's purse? I was in a dilemma. I did what most folks would do - nothing. I have felt bad about it ever since. I'm of the opinion that there should never be just one clerk in a store, so this kind of thing is less likely to happen.
Any ideas? What should I have done?

I don't think in this instance there was much else you could do. If there were a second person or manager present you would have been able to make them aware but with one person??
The clerk probably had some kind of backup in the form of someone he could call if there was a problem.
I would have called the police. It's not merely a matter of the purloined drinks. The more important issue is that she probably DID steal someone else's purse, and used her time in the restroom to go through it and put what she wanted from it (i.e., the credit cards and cash) into her own purse. The rest probably went into the restroom trash (whence the police would have been able to extract helpful evidence) or down the toilet (chance of recovery not so good).
Depending on the police response time, they might not have been able to apprehend the thief right away, but your call would still have been a major step toward identifying the miscreant -- especially if this Subway had a security camera.
In other words, there probably already IS a police report on the theft of the purse - but without your help, the police have no idea who they are looking for.
I think you should STILL tell the police what you observed. You know the approximate time when you were there. If they play the videotape from the security camera for you, you should be able to identify the thief.
It's not just a couple of drinks and a purse. The woman in question is probably a walking crime wave. Think HUNDREDS of purses and other valuables that will continue to be pinched until this woman is put behind bars. The next stolen purse could be yours.
Thanks, Steve and Drew. Yea, I have since talked with the manager about what happened, and she told me that they know who this woman is. They are aware of her. But the sad thing is that due to business, they do occasionally have certain employees that can handle traffic flow well work by themselves. When I told her what happened, I also said they are taking a chance letting employees work alone - thy can be ripped off, as was the case here, or something urgent may happen, and they will be stuck, and have a hard time handling it alone. She also candidly told me they don't have security cameras,so that's not good. I feel really bad about the handbag, and I wish I had taken some kind of action. You know how this event hits you and you think later of something else you could have done? Well, I will definitely act next time. I would just call 911 on my cell, and get the cops out there. It couldn't have hurt, right?
Thanks, guys, for your input.
The sad thing is, everybody pays for the loss revenues from thefts of goods in stores. The businesses consider them as part of shrink.Groceries and stores just add the costs to product prices. Employees are told not to confront shoplifters because it's a possible cost of litigations that corporations don't want to be part of. The employee or the thief can get hurt. Either way, businesses don't want to deal with lawsuits or pay for any medical expenses.
